Discuss.

Depends.

If they wanna die, they should be able to call it on their own, not wait patiently for it to come, especially if they're in pain.

However, if they're in a coma....Thats tough. Depends on chances of survival and age and stuff.

That's how I feel as well.
If you're entitled to a right to life, you should have an equal right to die.

Um...(yeah, I feared this)

Okay, does anyone remember the Terri Schiavo case? She was in a vegetative state, and because she had no living will, her husband and parents ended up in court battles over whether or not to end her life.

Should loved ones be allowed to pull the plug, or remove food and water as in her case, when such a thing happens?

Hm. Well.
I think euthinasia is alright.
I also think the Teri Schiavo case was unethical, but only because of the method used.
There are better ways to off a person than starvation or dehydration.

True. Even though i personally do not remember said case ^^;

If the way to kill them is letting them die slowly, such as dehydration and starvation, then no, let them live, as much as it actually is living.

I also disagree with the dehydration/starvation method. Just because someone may lack mental capacity does not mean that they lack the ability to feel the pain one would suffer when deprived of food and water. A nice overdose of adrenaline or some other injection would be much more ideal.

Agreed. I do belevie the lethal injections used in capital punishment are relatively painless, it would make sense to me to use that sort of injection.

Honestly, I think it's the parent/spouse's decision if the person is either:
a.Brain dead
or
b. not brain dead, but is no longer who they used to be and needs life support

Actually, now that i think about it, Gneo is prolly staying away from this conversation because of Keenan.

There's always a battle between the spouse/significant other and the parent/sibling. I think they should each have a say, but it can get very sticky.

I apologize for my absence. .___.
Hmm, no Keenan died on his own, there was no plug-pulling or intervening.
In any case, it depends on the situation.
Old person---they want to die.
So let them.
Coma---
depends on why they're in a coma.
If it was a coma induced by a diabetic overdosing on insulin, DEAR GOD, KILL THEM BEFORE THEY WAKE TO A HORRIBLE PAINFUL DEATH. O____O
But if it's a coma where the brain is dead, I say brain dead is dead-dead, I don't care how alive the organs are.

Yes, but what about a person in their twenties with a condition causing them much pain with no foreseeable cure on the horizon? Or a person that has been paralyzed from the neck down, and they don't have the will to live anymore as a fraction of their former self?

Also: I don't know how familiar anyone else is with Dr. Jack Kevorkian, who helped terminally ill patients commit suicide using some setup he created which used lethal drugs or gas. Should such "physician-assisted suicide" (although the State of Michigan revoked his medical license once they knew what he was up to) be unlawful, when it could almost be viewed as providing the means for desperate citizens to perform self-euthanasia?

I, personally, agree with Dr. Kevorkian.
Eh, that's my opinion though.

As long as there's a waiting period, for it, so the person was really sure.

Oh, I agree. That way you know the person is of stable mind and knows that that is what they really want to do; not just a spur-of-the-moment decision spurred by a something like a depressive episode in someone who is bi-polar.

Right, Right.
Then again, I suppose the family should probably have a say as well.
Perhaps councilling or something beforehand?
I'm pretty sure they do that with abortion in Minnesota, so as to discourage the person from going thrugh with it.
